Moving to and living in Hawaii? Hullo, ok heres the deal. this question, at this moment, is hypothetical. so before I even ask, I want to make that clear so no one gets there panties in a bunch and starts being a jerk. I don't know how or why you would, but I know someone will, so please don't. alrighty, heres my question. I'm considering a move to hawaii, I truely feel like I would thrive there, I love the ocean deeply, and I'm studying to become a marine biologist and want to study reefs, so I feel like Hawaii would be a wonderful place to live, but I don't want to dive in blind. any and all information or links anyone has regarding living there (i.e cost of living, tuition costs, average availability of jobs/apartments, general moving expenses from the mainland, average salary) would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind that I'm 18, I'll be living alone or with a roommate, possibly on a campus. I have a cat I want to take with me, and I've heard that it can be tricky bringing pets to the island. I'm trying to keep this as cheap as possible but I don't have any illusions about it being like it is here in New Mexico. anyway Thank you in advanced! I am AWARE its expensive. In fact I think I said i knew that already. if your not gonna help me, and give some kind of decent answer please don't answer at all. I don't want to have to read "its expensive" 400 times. this is all very helpful (and sorry saraimay75, lol the panties in a bunch thing was directed at any negative jerks who might answer, not everyone)

SANTI replied: "it's only logical that you'd want to move there: -job -ocean -island life but keep in mind that things cost much more on the island since it is a desirable place to live and it the cost of living is much higher because of its location so far away from the mainland ( shipping expenses). If you're not the homesick type, i'm sure you'd have lots of fun. :)"

tritran5555 replied: "very expensive"

boomer gal replied: "I am a little confused, since you say that you are studying marine biology. Are you aready enrolled in a program? If so, is it even feasable to move to Hawaii? If you are not yet in school, then the University of Hawaii has a good marine biology program. Here is a link to UH Manoa. It is tough for non-residents to get scholarships to attend most state schools. You might look into whether you could qualify for the Western University Exchange program. Try this link for info, although it is for a school in CA, it does have some info on WUE. You might also look into programs at Hawaii Pacific University or Chaminade. Rentals are among the most expensive in the nation. If you are going to be going to college, you should consider dorming if possible (though that would exclude the cat). Otherwise, you will want to find one or two people to share housing with. Even a modest rental will set you back at least $1,500/mo. Here is a link. Your cat will need to go through quarantine; if you plan ahead, you can minimize the time your pet needs to be quarantined, which also minimizes expenses. Here is a link: It also makes it more difficult to find a landlord willing to rent to you. Here's a link: Moving to Hawaii will not be easy because of our very high cost of living, but if you are in school & you have some degree of support from your family, it may work out for you."

saraimay75 replied: "So you know that Hawaii is expensive. That's a plus. Ninety percent of EVERYTHING is shipped in this is the main reason it cost more. And Hawaii is an excellent place to study Marine Biology. For all the reason you stated. We have an excellent bus system on Oahu. If you are willing to take the time then it will cut down on gas costs. You can have car but you might want to take the bus most of the time and use a car only when really needed. Hawaii is one of most culturally diverse place in America. We have several cultures here. Hawaiians being the most obvious. Due to Hawaii's history there is some racism against Whites. Some can't take this. May this is why you thought we would get "our panties in a bunch". Not everybody you live in Hawaii is Hawaiian. To be Hawaiian to must have Hawaiian blood. Or Hawaiian ancestry. If you are like me and have lived in Hawaii all their life but have no Hawaiian blood you are considered a Local. We also have a diverse Asian population; Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese (sp?). All these culture differ. And it is best if you learn the differences. We also have a dialect of Pidgin Creole English. Or it is called Pidgin for short. This language was created during the plantation days. We had workers from all over Asia and the Pacific they all spoke different languages and the needed a way to communicate. So a new lang grew and was created. There a some who hear Pidgin an the equate it with lack of intelligence. Do not do this. Then there is what can be called "Rock Fever" some people tend to feel trapped because they can't drive anywhere else but Hawaii. There is no way you can drive into another state. If you need to fly home to the Mainland then 1) take more time because you have to fly over an ocean first. 2) Will cost more because you have to fly over an ocean first. So I went beyond the expensive I hope this satisfies you knoweldge."

bs replied: "Check out the book "So, You Want To Live In Hawaii". UH Manoa has a Marine Biology program, but there are better programs at mainland schools."

Lawlz replied: "Ever heard of haole hate? Locals will rarely employ people who came from the mainland. Its gonna be tough for you living as a transplant being white. Black / latino and especially asians here get the least prejudice. So yeah theres a racism thing going on here. If you move to hawaii I advise you to stay with your own crowd..."

For those in the NURSING field and have taken the NLN exam, what exactly should I expect? I am a hard working student with excellent grades, but for this test, I am walking in blind. It's so competitive here, that no one will really help you. I am taking the NLN exam (in Hawaii) in January, and really need to know what to study for....specifically as possible. I also heard that there is a lot of chemisty questions, but like what?? Thanks guys!!

melanie replied: "I'm also taking the NNLN test in January, I decided to go to the library and choose books on these topics. Chemistry, the completes idiots guide, physics, algebra and geometry. I feel that I scored high enough on my english to pass. Im also studying the RN exam for NNLN, that you can usually get through any college book store. also if you have taken basic bio and A&P the basic questions are there. Compounds, elements, bonds, chemical reactions and reactants, exchanges of gases and nutrients. omsosis, gradient, active transport and facilitative transport"

Please help me find a book by photographer Sophie Calle!? I am looking for a book entitled 'The Blind' by photographer Sophie Calle. I live in Hawaii on the big island and there are not many book stores available so I am looking to purchase it online. I have searched major websites to no avail (amazon, barnes & noble, etc.) Any suggestions as to where I can locate this book? Thanks!

From: Surfer G Subject: You are stupid Message: You are stupid he is not black skin He is Arab/white/black very little percent black. Look at him are you blind? Look how he talks, he talks educated, and he may be brown skin man, but a brain of a white man.A full black man doesn’t even have the intelligences as a white man.

Please help me find this? I have seen alot of people in Hawaii attach large sheets of what looks like cheap bamboo roll blinds to their chain link fences. It's a cheap way to get some privacy. I would like to use some of this to hang off the awning on our balcony to block some of the afternoon sun. Does anyone know what this is called and where I can find it?

xxxxx More amazing facts xxxxx? The statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro is exactly facing the statue of Christ in Lisbon, Portugal. There are 118 ridges on the outside of a dime. The dot above an 'i' is called a tittle. A peanut is not a nut; it is a legume. The phrase "sleep tight" originated when mattresses were set upon ropes woven through the bed frame. To remedy sagging ropes, one would use a bed key to tighten the rope. There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. There are four states where the first letter of the capital city is the same letter as the first letter of the state: Dover, Delaware; Honolulu, Hawaii; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. There are four cars and ten lightposts on the back of a ten-dollar bill . Venetian blinds were invented in Japan. ABBA got their name by taking the first letter from each of their first names (Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-frid.)

Help!!! I think i'm in the middle of a scam!!!? I responded to an ad in the paper asking for 30 people with no experience to come to work for them... I applied, interviewed the next day and got hired. I've only attended these "training sessions" for 3 days now and everything seems way to fishy. I can't find their business on the BBB... I still have very little info on the company, never recieved a business card or antying professional looking with an address and phone number. My other big concern is that these people get us all in the little tiny room in the little tiny building, close all the blinds, have a video camera set up in the back of the room, and spend 2 hours a day telling us how we're going to make close to $5000 our very first month, that this is not a scam, that they're a real business looking for the right people to work hard. They get up in front of our class a tell us how they're all driving hummers and bmw's, live in the their dream home, go on private Hawaii vacations in the most expensive hotels, showing us their $5000 dollar Rolex.... blah blah blah. What legit business's top guy gets up in front of you showing you his 8 credit cards, pictures of his Hawaii vacation, tells you to look at his BMW, shows you the flashy rolex on his arm...and tells you this could all be yours in 1 year with the company. What legit business spends so much time reiterating the fact that theyr'e a real business if you just trust them, you're dreams will come true??? Anyone heard of this business- Townecraft... it's cookeware... the only other info I know is that the name of the business i'm working for is Commonwealth Health and Nutrition... but you can seem to find 1 damn tidbit of info on this company online anywhere...THESE PEOPLE ARE SKETCHY and I'm afriad they might be some damn good scam artists. Plus let me throw the ringer in there.... tonight at about 9:00 I rode to the little conveinance store to grab a pack of smokes... this store is located right beside the place i've been going to for three days now. The lady the spoke to our class today-Wendy, General Manager... I saw her Hummer parked there and then I saw the top-dog's car. He is supposedly the main guy, the big guy. He's 56 years old, dresses in his fancy gear, very smooth talker, drives the BMW sitting in the parking lot.... As I was coming out of the store I saw the "big guy" and this Wendy girl coming out of the little building getting into the same car. So I admit, I followed a little just to see if maybe they were going to a hotel or whatever. They went to a little fast food restaurant, so I watched them and this Wendy girl is about 27-ish, the bossman is 56. I was like ok they're just grabbing a bite to eat... until I completely saw them kissing each other, rubbing each other, holding hands... etc. WIERD! So if anyone can help... please do!!! I know that if they ask me to buy anything then I'm not... I know i'm not signing anything. But they keep saying how I am going to make a killing in this business, I will not have to pay for anything, and they keep reiterating the fact that this is not a scam and trying to convince us that this is a real company. Just think it is way too fishy. If anyone has any advice please help QUICKLY!!! Because i'm suppose to go back there tomorrow and if this is a scam, then I want out as quickly as possible. Thanks.

Stormy Sky replied: "Just a hint- Google Townecraft cookware. It definitely does not seem worth it. This could be legit, though. Are they actually representing the company? If they aren't registered representatives it could be a scam."

LovesTheConstitution replied: "This sounds like a high-pressure commission sales organization. If you can make $5,000 monthly from selling to persons who attend an in-home "party" demonstrating a product, that would seem remarkable. With those sales skills, think what you could accomplish selling high quality services and products through legitimate or normal channels."

allen s replied: "This definitely sounds like a scam... but not necessarily for the reasons you state. First, anytime someone tries to show you how much money you can make, why aren't THEY doing it themselves? Second, if this truly IS legit, they will have no problem showing you business licenses and such. Finally, all of these "objects" (Rolex watches, cars, etc.) could simply be leased or even stolen. Here's what you do .... tell them your uncle or someone is very interested in joining as well. They will probably want to have you invite them to a meeting... THEN say something like, "He's a detective with the police department, and gets off work at______." THEN see what they do. If they change their tune to discourage you into bringing him, you'll KNOW waht the score is!"

Mark A replied: "I don't know all the details and am not qualified to judge this company but this is what I found: According to Rip Off Report I was scammed into buying a set of $2149 cookware. The rep said I had to buy the pots to work for the company but if it didnt work out then I could return them within 90 days and the contract would be void. Well after a month and a half I realized that they put out these Part time job cards to get people to buy the pots thinking they have a job and never wor but are stuck with the pots. I tried to return my set but the corp. office in New Jersey said it's no such thing as returns and that they won't do anything cause the rep that sold them is a independent contractor and they are not responsible for what he does even though he is selling their product. GO FIGURE! They scam people. Military families and all. Tasha fayetteville, North Carolina U.S.A."

? replied: "my guess is it it legitamate, but they want you to be a salesman of the year to achieve all that. if you feel uincomfortable about it them by all means move on!"
